Book Review: Come to the Table

Neta Jackson has done it again. Come to the Table is the second book in her SouledOut Sisters Series...say that five times fast. I would recommend reading her books in order (starting with the Yada Yada Prayer Group Series) as she really takes her time developing her characters to where you feel like you know them; like they could be your friends. I love reading her books and only wished she could write faster!!

I received a complimentary copy from Thomas Nelson's BookSneeze site in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Battle for Cannibal Island

As many of you know, I have a very awesome 7-year-old son. :) I was taught to have a love for reading at an early age and it is my desire that all of my kids love to read too. Easier said than done... When Reagan started reading, finding books that he enjoyed was easy enough, but as his level of reading progressed, I couldn't seem to find books that grabbed his attention. I tried the Magic Treehouse Series, but after a while I realized there was way too much magic in them. Finally, I discovered the Adventures in Odyssey Imagination Series from Focus on the Family. LOVE THEM! I rarely buy books (I love, love, love the library), especially at full price, but once Reagan devoured the first one, I bought the rest right away. I grew up listening to the Adventures in Odyssey radio program and I knew the doctrine was sound so I didn't feel the need to preview every book before he read them. Yay! I was super thrilled to get to review the Battle for Cannibal Island provided by the Tyndale Blog Network...or rather my son will review this great book.

Simply put, he told me that he liked the way the characters travel from one book to the next. He likes the fun adventures they go on. He doesn't want to tell the end of the story because he wants other kids to read it. :)

Stand By Me- Book Review

Neta Jackson is one of my favorite authors. She wrote the Yada Yada Prayer Group Series and then did a spin-off called the Yada Yada House of Hope Series followed by this book, Stand By Me, the 1st in the SouledOut Sisters Series. I would recommend reading these books in order because so many characters are developed as she goes and carried over into the other series. I thoroughly enjoy her books and this one did not disappoint!

Bringing Up Girls-Book Review

I have had a boy for 7 years now. I read Dr. Dobson's Bringing Up Boys when my son was 6 months old and thoroughly enjoyed it. I now have a baby girl and what a different creature she is!! She is now 9 months old and I figured it was time to read Bringing up Girls now. It starts out by talking about the physiological and psychological differences between boys and girls and I really appreciated all the research and learned a lot about myself as a girl. Dr. Dobson, as usual, hit a home run with this book and I highly recommend it.

For Women Only in the Workplace-Book Review

I love Shaunti Feldhahn's writing. While this specific book didn't speak to me at this point in my life (since I am not in the Workplace), her writing is still great. Her favorite book of mine was a joint venture with her husband called For Women Only/For Men Only. It's a two-in-one book where one side of the book is for women and the other side is for men. It's a great book for understanding the opposite sex. I would definitely recommend For Women Only in the Workplace if you are a woman in the workplace!

Book Review: Indelibe

Indelible -
        By: Kristen Heitzmann
I have never been bowled over by anything by Kristen Heitzmann, but this was one of the better ones. This book was definitely a little strange, but certainly made you think. Have you ever heard of an eidetic savant? The main character, Natalie, processes emotional images that lodge in her mind by sculpting the faces in clay. This book is apparently preceded by Heitzmann's novel, Indivisible. I wish I would have read that first. Maybe it would have connected some of the dots for me?

I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for my honest review.

Book Review: Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

I heard of this book at a practicum for my son's homeschool group called Classical Conversations. One of the speakers mentioned that it was an amazing book and so I wrote down the title in an effort to remember to seek it out. It got lost with all of my notes until BookSneeze offered this as a free eBook in exchange for my honest opinion. Woo-hoo! I was so excited to get to read it.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He's the subject of best-selling author Eric Metaxas's biography, "Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy." It is a New York Times Bestseller and winner of 2011 ECPA Book of the Year, 2011 Canterbury Medal by the Becket Fund recognizing courage in the defense of religious liberty and 2011 Christopher Award winner highlighting the power of faith, courage, and action. It deserves all of those awards. If you are into true stories, you will love this one. If you don't know his story, I really don't want to give it away so just check it out if you're looking for a good biography!! :) I am really not the best person to be reviewing books because I don't like to give any of the book away!!!

Book Review: A Heart for Freedom

Well, having a baby sure does put a damper on my reading production. She sure is cute and fun though. :) I have a stack of books on my dresser just waiting to be read and now I have an eReader too so there's a whole bunch of books on that thing too.

This book was gripping from the very beginning. I have to admit I lost interest towards the end, but I think that might have had something to do with me being 9 months pregnant as I was finishing this one. It is a great and TRUE story of a young student who was at the center of Tienanmen Square and witnessed the massacre of thousands of Chinese people. It wasn't until much later that she found true freedom in a relationship with God. She now fights for the rights and freedom for Chinese girls and is trying to overturn the "one-child" policy.

I received A Heart for Freedom by Chai Ling from Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for my honest review.

Giveaway - Formula prize pack

I am back with another giveaway courtesy of Perrigo Nutritionals through MyBlogSpark. Love them! Here is some great info:

"A recent study shows that only 30% of moms are willing to buy store brand products for their babies, but did you know that all infant formulas made in the United States must provide complete nutrition for growing babies and meet FDA requirements for safety, nutrition, and quality? In fact, store brand infant formulas are nutritionally equivalent to similar national formula brands such as Enfamil or Similac, but cost half the price, which can save you about $600 a year.

Outlined below are intriguing statistics generated from a recent study conducted among new moms like yourself:

Baby-related advertisements strike an emotional chord with moms – nearly one in four feel overwhelmed (23%) and one in five feel anxious (20%) or confused (20%)
53% of moms admit thoughts of their baby product budget plague them on a daily basis

37% of moms feel guilty if they cannot afford a specific product for their babies

Moms are willing to purchase store brand over the counter medicine for their baby (42%) and store brand pharmaceuticals (44%), but only 21% of moms are willing to buy store brand infant formula."

***Your prize pack will include 2 huge containers of formula, a blanket, a bottle and a bib!!! Just leave a comment on my blog stating you would like to win. Even if you don't have a baby right now or you are not giving them formula, it's either always nice to have on hand or I am sure you know someone you can give it to...so ALL are encouraged to enter. The giveaway will end Thursday morning at 8:00 AM and I will choose a winner shortly after using a random number generator. Please post on Facebook, tell your friends and/or tweet on Twitter to give others the chance to win as well.
